TODAY’S QUESTION

Raul asks, “I only have two weeks before I need to leave the country or find a job. How do I get one so quickly?

If this isn’t you, know that I get a similar message to this nearly every day and none of them thought they’d be this person either.

Recommendation: Start with narrowing down the reason you would need to leave and solve for that.

  • The first thing to better understand is why you’re so frantically in need of work. Do you require sponsorship and would need to leave if you can’t find a replacement? Is it due to the insane cost of living in your city and you need income? Or is it something else entirely?

  • The most common reason people tell me they have to leave the country is because they can’t afford the city and have a free place to live back home. I find that a good portion of people who move back home never return to the city they originally intended to live in, which is something to consider. If this is you, the best course I’ve seen is to find a part time job at a cafe or bar near you so that you can work 10-20 hours a week and find a new career path without the thousand pound weight of financial distress holding you back.

  • The second most common reason is lack of sponsorship. This is usually because someone lost their job or the company they work at decided not to sponsor them, even though promises had been made (brutal but common). For this, I’d get rid of any salary expectations and apply to every position that looks like a lateral or near-lateral move. Look for jobs that you’ve basically done before or can make it look like you have.

Conclusion:

Solve for the main problem you have. If you need a job urgently, you can’t have competing priorities. Salary expectations and companies with brand recognition work best for candidates with a longer window of time before they need to start a new role.
