TODAY’S QUESTION

Freya asks, “without new roles opening on weekends, what can I do to make the best use of that time?”

Recommendation: the successful candidates have spent their weekends doing wildly different things from part-time work to vacations. Looking back on what they did in the days and weeks right before getting a role, here is what I've seen work:

  • First, focus on the stress and desperation (if that’s you) on the things that actually matter. This is especially true if you have interviews coming up. Make your stories simple, concise, and hyper relevant to the role and interviewer. Have a sense of where the company is going and be able to explain the industry in 3 bullets.

  • If you don’t have an interview coming up, use the weekends as a way to keep the battery and energy up. From what I’ve seen work, community and exercise seem to be the two that are common among those that find jobs quickly.

  • Finally, the one thing that unites most people on the weekend who are just on the verge of an offer, is that they spend at least some time being around a close relationship. Usually a romantic partner or best friend, candidates who spend one evening with these people come on Monday with a renewed energy, tipping the scales in their favor when an opportunity presents itself.

Conclusion:

It depends on where you’re at in the job search, but the most important thing is to not spend it completely alone. You need to have battery left for the grind of the week.
