TODAY’S QUESTION
Roopa asks, “there’s a ton of advice on the internet and not all of it makes sense, including this newsletter. What should I listen to?”
Recommendation: this is a great question and I’m probably a bit biased but I’ll do my best to give you a straight answer:
First, I completely agree that for job seekers there is a lot of noise. No matter what you’re looking for, there are a thousand “experts” who want to tell you how and what to do. They’re often selling something, which makes it tough to know who to trust.
Second, find a few people you trust, who give advice that you generally agree with or find useful. Regardless of where they work or what their experience was, see if you can find someone who fulfills what you actually need.
Do you want someone who talks from the recruiters perspective, the candidates perspective, or something in-between?
Do you want support in writing better resumes to get interviews or help in interviewing to get final jobs - there seem to be numerous experts in both sides for you to choose from.
Finally, whatever you decide to do, test the strategies you find interesting out for yourself. Run short week or two week long tests to see if things work or provide you the value you’re promised.
If you’re considering purchasing a class, book, or coaching, try their free advice first to see if it actually works for your specific situation before spending a thing!
Conclusion:
Awesome question. Experiment and try things before following anyone or buying their products or services.
