TODAY’S QUESTION
Colin asks, “when I see job postings, the recruiter often mentions that people can reach out if they have questions. How can I best do that?”
Recommendation: This is a challenge that has demoralized many of us. After working with so many candidates, here’s how I’d think about it:
First, set the expectations that this note requesting candidates to reach out was automatically sent out or included in the job posting and wasn’t specifically for you or anyone else.
Recruiters’ main stakeholder is the company that is hiring so the way they spend their day is often in conflict for what is best for a specific candidate.
Second, you lose very little by sending them a message mentioning your intent and asking if there’s a possibility to meet someone on the team or speak with them about the role.
I’ve seen hundreds of these sent out and can’t for the life of me recall a single time it ended up in a furthered opportunity.
That said, I’ve been wrong before and you may be the exception. As well, just messaging them does get your name into their inbox. Maybe there’s a psychological impact to seeing your name a few times - I feel I’m reaching here but the main point is that anything is possible and if it takes less than a minute, why not?
Finally, instead of focusing on recruiters, along with your application request the connection of those within the team you’re applying to.
Most companies make it possible for referrals to be made post-application. Even if that doesn’t work, the connections you make can let HR know you two spoke and you’re a delight, which acts all the same.
Conclusion:
Recruiters aren’t working for you so don’t expect them to act that way. Send the message if it can be done quickly and move onto higher ROI activities like real networking!
Have a great day,
Adam
