Friday, January 31 - "How Can I Improve in February?"

Happy Friday!

Here’s what’s on the job description for today:

  1. New roles from one of the dominant players in tech-driven food delivery.

  2. Today’s Question: “I had some interviews in January but nothing has progressed as I hoped. How can I improve things in February?”

TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Question: “I had some interviews in January but nothing has progressed as I hoped. How can I improve things in February?”

Recommendation: that can be a demoralizing experience. Here’s how I’d go about improving in February:

  • First, I would ask why you think you’re not progressing. Here are a few questions I’d ask:

    • How confident are you in talking about the technical side of the roles including specific tools or software?

    • When asked to describe a story or experience in your past, how do you feel about the flow, structure, and general strength of your answers?

  • Second, if you’re struggling to discuss the technical parts of the role, I would consider whether you’re applying for the right roles or if you just need to brush up on specific competencies you haven’t used or discussed in a while.

    • Often, a company will get really specific on questions about a tool or software they use, wanting their new hire to be confident they can work with it on day 1.

    • If this has been your experience, figure out the few tools that are common or mentioned in the job description and write a cheat sheet you would give to someone who was new to a role where this was a required skill.

  • Finally, if you feel you can talk about the technical skills, it may be worth reviewing your stories.

    • One challenge is when you’re good at telling stories if you’ve prepared them but not when asked a less obvious question where you have to think about one on the spot.

    • To prepare for this situation, come up with a process you will follow so you can provide a reasonably strong answer no matter the question.

Conclusion:

February is going to be a big month as interview processes begin and finish for many candidates. By locating and working on what’s holding you back is the key to improving your chances of landing a great job.

Have a great weekend,

Adam
