TODAY’S QUESTION

Jonas asks, “I’ve seen posts talking about networking so I always reach out to recruiters when I apply but get nothing in response. What am I doing wrong?“

We need a new LinkedIn banner that says “Open To Responding Like A Human”.

Recommendation: Even though their image and a link to their page is right there next to the role, recruiters and hiring managers rarely respond. In light of that, here’s what I would do:

  • If you’re going to message recruiters, try to stand out among the crowd. They will get hundreds of messages explaining candidate’s skills and “perfect fit”. Instead, try starting yours with “ERROR IN YOUR POST” and then point out that the JD is missing information around whether the company treats their employees like family. Do something innovative or interesting to get their attention.

  • Once you’ve sent an interesting message, I would head over to the company page and add 10-20 people who work there (as close to the role or team you’re applying to as possible). These are real humans and will be more useful connections and with 10-20, you’re likely to get one or two responses.

  • The final thing, which will help you stand out is to EMAIL the line manager. It should be possible to figure out who’s running the team by their company page. Then head over to this website to help you guess the email company email address if it isn’t on their LinkedIn. Not everyone checks LinkedIn but everyone checks their email.

Conclusion:

I don’t love messaging recruiters but if you do, try to stand out. Instead, I recommend aiming for line managers and team members who will be more useful anyways!
