Friday, May 24 - "Can't pass ATS"

Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the JD today:

  1. A company that takes a different approach to teaching tech skills is hiring in both the UK and USA.

  2. A Cambridge MBA asks, “I can’t get passed the ATS - how should I create a resume that does?”

It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”

IN HIRING

Multiverse

  • A tech-focused education company, Multiverse aims to find apprenticeships and on-the-job training so students can get experience before entering the job market.

  • While the office snacks they mention sound delicious, make sure to check the job description as some mention an inability to sponsor visas (at least they’re upfront about it).

  • Nearly 40 open roles in the UK and USA, with hybrid and remote options, there are job openings in sales, marketing, product, strategy, and data.

TODAY’S QUESTION

A Cambridge MBA asks, “I can’t get passed the ATS - how should I create a resume that does?”

My initial reaction when I hear this is, “how do you know it was the ATS?”

Recommendation: Assuming you know it’s because of automation software and isn’t because you’re just not the perfect fit, here are a few things you can try:

  • Check to see how ATS views your resume? Click here to try the free version of a tool that gives you a score and some broad improvement ideas. You can use the premium version if you want more detailed advice (note that I’m not affiliated in any way to this company and do not receive payment if you sign up for premium).

  • When considering which key words to include, focus on the first requirement and responsibility in their respective lists. Pay the most attention to specific tools, software, and certifications they ask for which match your experience.

  • If any company is going to use ATS, it will be the large companies who get hundreds of applications for each role and huge hiring budgets. Focus you’re networking on the larger companies as a referral is a near guarantee that your resume will get read by a person.

Conclusion:

While I doubt how many companies use ATS, it never hurts to spend a few minutes double checking how the software would score your resume. Whether the company does or not, using key words from the JD is always a good idea.
