Friday, May 31 - "I Hate The Tests!"

Somehow it’s okay for people to chuckle about not being good at math. Yet, if I said “I never learned to read,” they’d say I was an illiterate dolt.

TODAY’S QUESTION

Elaine asks, “before I get invited to an interview, I’m forced to do some stupid math test with graphs and tables. How do I get past these quickly and move onto the interview?”

I see this a lot with the candidates I work with. You’re told they won’t make a decision based on the test but that they’re just part of the overall application. That’s B.S. - they’re super important and a terrible way to lose a job opportunity.

Recommendation: Treat them as important as they are and prepare as if they’re the final round interview. Here’s how:

  • Spend some time and take notes on every detail they give you. See if they tell you how many questions and how much time is given - is it a test of your skills or your speed? Find out what sort of puzzles or topics they will be testing you on - is it math, graphs, logic, or something else?

  • Find a tool to practice online. If you’re in a position where you have access to a career team, ask them first as many students or recent grads have access to premium tools they don’t know about. If not, look online for free tools. I highly recommend Prep Lounge’s resources which can be used for free - the mental math tool and drills are a great place to start. Click here to check it out. Note that you’ll need to sign up and create a free account to access this tool.

Conclusion:

Anything other than an immediate rejection is rare these days so treat every opportunity with the importance it deserves and practice hard before the real thing.
