TODAY’S QUESTION

Fran asks, “I like how many different things banks do. How do I get a job at one of the big banks?”

Recommendation: I get where you’re coming from - large banks do everything in 2024 and there’s probably a place you’d find a lot of interest. They can be tough to break into without relevant experience.

Here’s how I’d do it:

  • First, consider what you would do at a bank, whether it be product, data analysis, project management, whatever.

    • Then go and speak to a minimum of 5 people who do that job at a bank now. Find out what that role is like there and what they would do to enter a bank if they were in your shoes.

    • If you want some ideas on how to network, this article gives a brief overview on how to best get started.

  • Second, find stepping stones to banking. A big legacy bank such as Barclays is going to be a tough first step but a neo bank like Monzo, Revolut, or Wise may be more open to bringing someone on with the right skills but not as much industry experience.

    • If you struggle there, find a startup that will take you on. It won’t be a lot of money but you’ll probably enjoy it more and get a ton of useful experience.

  • Finally, do what you can do now, in your spare time and for free. Find free tutorials and websites that will give you some lessons on how a bank operates, the difference between front, middle, and back office. Learn about how interest rates impact a bank’s different functions.

    • The goal is to have a decent understanding of the banking world so that you don’t come off as inexperienced as you actually are.

Conclusion:

Being pissed at others is a pretty common experience in the job candidate world. Find a place where you can say what you need to say and then refocus your next steps around action to move forward more positively.
