Friday, November 22 - "What Do You Think About Contract Roles?

Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the job description for today:

  1. New roles from a scaling data automation software company.

  2. Lilian asks, “I’m struggling to find full time roles but there are some interesting contract roles. What do you think about taking one?”

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

- Winston Churchill

TODAY’S QUESTION

Lilian asks, “I’m struggling to find full time roles but there are some interesting contract roles. What do you think about taking one?”

Recommendation: I think it’s a pretty great idea but there are some drawbacks. Here is how I’d think about it:

  • First, contract roles (and other similar types of working) can be a great way to get experience in a new industry or make some money while the job market is what it is. I would consider freelance as another version of this but with a bit more flexibility.

  • Second, it’s worth being honest about the drawbacks. One of the biggest for international students is that if you take a 1-year contract job, then you have less years of your working visa remaining and it makes you less attractive for full time roles.

    • That’s not to say you can’t find a full time job afterwards but it’s easier to present yourself as a candidate if you have two years of a visa left rather than just one.

  • Finally, if you’re considering a contract role, set it up so that it really suits the lifestyle you want.

    • You have so much more negotiating flexibility if you’re going to be a contractor. Think about what type of contract would make you love that role (salary, work from home, hours, communication style and volume, etc.).

Conclusion:

Overall, I think contract roles are a great idea right now and are less of a risk to the employer if things slow down or don’t work out. Set them up right so you make it a really great time!
