TODAY’S QUESTION
Ollie asks, “the interviews I get invited to have lower salary ranges than I was expecting. What am I to do with these low offers?”
Recommendation: I have noticed some very low offers recently, even for top tier MBA students with many years experience. Here are a few options I’ve seen work:
First, from what I’ve seen, this is very industry and role dependent. Even though the industry is dead at the moment, consulting roles are not offering low salaries.
This doesn’t work for everyone but consider which industries and roles you have a chance in.
You can consult this website to get an estimate of salaries: HERE
Second, geography can be a big difference maker in terms of salary opportunity. Most readers, although not all, are from the USA or UK. The USA has pretty high salaries across the board but countries to consider would be:
Netherlands
Germany
Luxemburg
Austria
Belgium
Switzerland
Other Nordics
Finally, when you’re asked about salary, give a broad range. If you’re being told 50k a lot, but you want 60+, mention you’re open to roles between 50-65k.
This will get you past the question and screening round but open up the opportunity to negotiate later on.
Conclusion:
The job market is full of lower offers at the moment. There isn’t always an option to increase offers but give yourself as many chances as possible to get the salary you deserve.
