TODAY’S QUESTION
Sarah asks, “is it possible to shift into VC. How do I break in without direct experience?”
Recommendation: VC is such an interesting industry that it makes complete sense why so many people consider it as a job option. Here’s the best way into the field:
First, there is a big difference between being on the investment team and working in a non-investment function such as business development, portfolio analysis, and performance improvement.
Since VC is so popular and competitive, it will be best to find the type of opportunity you can bring relevant experience in.
If you’re unsure whether you could switch departments (from sales to performance improvement for example), network with those in that role and ask them. It’s the shortest distance from question to answer in this scenario.
Second, understand that networking is useful but in a different way than other types of industries.
Referrals are most valuable if you’re making a big switch into the industry. If you don’t have any financial experience nor any startup experience, networking for referrals is mandatory.
Networking is also highly valuable in finding out what the process of interviews are for the firms in your area. What types of assessments and expectations do they have for new hires?
Finally, once you know what type of role you’re best suited for, it’s time to actually find roles.
Conclusion:
VC is an awesome field and the exit opportunities are endless. With the right strategy, a switch of industries is possible.
