Thursday, May 30 - "What About The Local Language?"

Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the JD today:

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.

TODAY’S QUESTION

Hannah asks, “How do I navigate a job market in a country where I don’t speak the local language?”

Recommendation: At the end of the day, you need to find a role that will be a fit with your skills. When it comes to language skills, here is how I’d recommend finding roles that wouldn’t require a deep understanding of the local language:

  • The easiest way is get referrals or to learn from your network. If someone from the company will talk with you, you’ll get a good idea of what the business language is.

  • Your second option is to use job boards where English is the main language. You can start your search with this job board to take a look at companies open to hiring international applicants.

  • Best of all, if you want to apply to a company and wonder if they are open to international candidates, take a look at their current employees. If you can’t pronounce anyone’s last name, lower your expectations in terms of them working in your mother tongue.

Conclusion:

If you’re in a country with a language you don’t speak, it’s going to be more difficult to find a job. Clearly. For that reason, slow down and work more on things like networking that can help you skip the initial stages of a competitive interview structure.
