Today’s Question: “Many jobs I see are asking for a drivers license so I can visit work sites or travel for work. Is it worth me getting my license?”

Recommendation: I’ve always thought this was a ridiculous requirement for candidates, given the plethora of other options, but it exists and here’s what I’d do if I was in the same position:

• First, be honest about how many opportunities require a license.

  • In my experience, it’s less than 5% of relevant roles that ask for a drivers license so while there are consistently roles that require it, it’s not an overwhelming amount.

• Second, the roles I see with such requirement still have wild numbers of applicants.

  • There are clearly enough drivers who are interested (or candidates who lie) that getting the drivers license won’t provide a significant boost in your competitiveness.

• Finally, I have seen candidates get their drivers license. It’s usually those candidates who want to be able to drive for other reasons (travel, weekend camping trips, etc.).

  • If you’ve been thinking about getting it anyways, then this might be the perfect time and reason to go do it. Hopefully you’re able to do it without expensive lessons.

Conclusion:

For some candidates, it makes complete sense and if you do, make sure to have some fun and go for a weekend driving trip :)
