TODAY’S QUESTION

Noah asks, “I have been applying for months and finally got my first interview! What do you recommend?”

First off, congratulations Noah. This means something is working and I highly recommend celebrating the small wins :)

Recommendation: Now that you have an interview coming up, you’re onto the fun/terrifying/high potential portion of this whole process. Here is what I have seen work well when preparing for interviews:

  • Start by writing down the main items in the job descriptions. Focus on anything in a requirements section along with hard skills, software, tools, and industry knowledge they ask for.

    • Then write down your experiences that match each one. This will be your database to refer to for the rest of the prep.

  • Second, ensure you’re 100% ready for the parts of an interview you know are coming. This includes the following:

    • Introduction

    • Why do you want to work here?

    • Why do you want this role?

    • Do you have any questions for us?

      • NOTE: Make the questions at the end about the interviewer rather than just about the process or company - people like to talk about themselves so let them. Ask why they decided to work there or what keeps them at the firm year after year.

  • Finally, prepare for the specific type of interview. If it’s a 30 minute screening call, prepare the above along with answers regarding salary, visa, and when you can start. If it’s an hour long, have a few stories that show your experience as a candidate.

    • A final note that the two most important things are that the interviewer thinks you have relevant experience and that they like you. If all else fails, aim to show you can do the job and that you’re curious about the interviewer so you two become friends.

Conclusion:

Focus on the getting the simple things right and if you can make a friend throughout the process, all the better!
