TODAY’S QUESTION
Monica asks, “I’ve been looking for months in this city and have done everything I can including tons of applications and interviews. At what point do I give up on this city?”
Recommendation: this is quite a personal choice. Here is what I’ve learned by supporting others through a similar transition:
First, it clearly depends on how flexible you are. With those close to us often having their own location-based jobs, it can be difficult to move.
For many international students though, traveling to other cities or neighboring countries for career is a complete possibility and often even an opportunity to see more of the world.
Second, I recommend opening up to other nearby options early in the process. If you have a main city in mind, then make that your focus but you don’t need to be monogamous with the cities you look for work in.
After a few months of looking, many clients decide that applying and interviewing in that region isn’t working out the way they thought. Take this as a sign to open up some portion of your application strategy to other locations if possible.
Finally, test the field a bit. If you decide you’re going to apply to other countries or cities, pick a few that interest you and apply until you get a 2-3 interviews. While networking is always a tool in the belt, sometimes it’s best to begin by reviewing 5-10 relevant job posting, looking for language requirements and then just applying and seeing if your candidacy is a fit.
Conclusion:
You’re at a challenging place and opening yourself up to nearby cities or other counties is a great way to breath energy into a stale job search.
