TODAY’S QUESTION
Gloria asks, “I’ve been in the search for a few months now and I’m a bit worried about December. What should I expect from this month?”
Recommendation: This is a big question Gloria. Here is how I see December for my clients and other candidates:
First, for those currently in interview processes, it’s best not to wait too long in scheduling as the companies will want to close the process before vacations and 2025 begins.
Second, if you’re in the endless cycle of applications and rejections, expect things to slow down for the next 4-5 weeks.
With upcoming holidays (a much more common thing in Europe where vacations are double the rest of the world), hiring teams will reduce the number of new hiring processes they begin.
This doesn’t mean zero and there will still be new job postings, just far less than October and November.
Finally, I recommend sitting down and re-thinking how you’ll judge success over the next month.
Often candidates use volume of applications or volume of interviews as the metrics to judge their output. This will no longer be that relevant.
For December, one way to get a lot of value is to reconnect with people in your network who have helped you in the past or may help you in the future. I would personally set myself a minimum of 5 messages thanking referees or people you met during the process and wishing them a great holiday. This way, if you reach out in January, you can be carrying on the conversation from December, rather than just being someone who only reaches out when you need something.
Conclusion:
December is a slower month, especially after the next week. Refocus on what will bring you the most value :)
