TODAY’S QUESTION

Gareth asks, “December felt like a waste of time and I’m hoping January is a lot better. How do I prepare for January?”

Recommendation: December can be a tough month in hiring. Here’s how I’d prepare for January if I woke up in your shoes:

  • First, the beginning of January is a special time of the year. There will be a lot of opportunities being posted as new budgets are approved and everyone begins their new projects with glee.

    • Because of this, I’d prepare to do a lot of applications but I would relax my networking efforts. Given how busy things can get, it’s harder for those you’re messaging to find time to meet with you.

  • Second, because there will be lots of applicable jobs available, prepare your process now.

    • What steps will you follow to so you can send high quality applications without it taking forever.

    • Find the prompts, the AI tools, and the community you want to use so this is all as prepared as it can be for next week.

  • Finally, you have 3-4 months of high quality job searching months coming. Think about free or nearly free things you can do after you get certain achievements such as an interview or a week of applications.

    • Set the goals now and the rewards you’ll receive if you surpass those goals. With fun things incorporated into the process, you’re far less likely to burn out and will have a better chance of taking advantage of the high values months of job searching.

Conclusion:

While I hope you all get jobs in the first few days of January, set things up now so that you can be productive for as long as you need.

Have a great day,

Adam
