TODAY’S QUESTION
Patricia asks, “I’m applying to 10 jobs a day and getting very little in results. How did hiring get this broken and difficult?
Recommendation: that sounds exhausting! Here’s how I feel about the job market and a time to improve your situation:
First, the job market is clearly brutal at the moment. It seems to me that there is an imbalance of supply/demand due to a rough economic picture. Companies aren’t taking on big new business activities and that impacts hiring in those companies and the ones that would support it.
Second, while the job market is awful, an honest look at things does show that jobs are still getting posted and candidates are still finding a job. It’s not impossible but much more difficult than anyone not currently searching for a job considers it to be.
Finally, to improve your life and hiring situation, I’d consider working on the process rather than focusing totally on execution.
Write down the process you follow in a regular day of job searching.
Then take 10-15 minutes to see if you could improve that process so you have the best chances of getting interviews and offers.
Some places to look include doing all the searching first, then ranking the jobs you find before sending any applications.
Consider how networking fits into your process. Do you do it at a set time (first or last thing you do) or do you do it after you send an application?
Conclusion:
Your frustration is evident and makes sense given the experience of most candidates in the job market right now. Setup a sustainable process so that you can stay in the game for longer and be one of the successes.
Have a great day,
Adam
