TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Questions: “after graduating, I’m not exactly sure what I want to do but strategy and operations looks interesting. How do I get a role in that field?”

Recommendation: this is a common feeling for many graduating MBA students. Here’s how I’d think about it:

  • First, given how difficult the hiring process is at the moment, it’s worth taking a day or two to consider what is really important to you.

    • I’d start by ranking the following:

      • Company brand

      • Compensation

      • Projects/work

      • Location

      • Seniority

      • Industry

  • Second, if after doing this exercise, you still believe strategy and operations is right for you, I’d follow this process:

    • a) Find 3-5 job applications that you’d like to apply to

    • b) Review them and note the commonalities and differences

    • c) Build a resume which includes the common skills or responsibilities but has the unique ones about each role at the top so they’re seen first

  • Finally, while you begin to apply to these roles, start networking with those in who currently hold similar roles to better understand hiring needs, iterate on your process, and improve your odds.

    • Ask those with similar roles what skills their team hires for in these roles. Get a sense of the type of experience they have.

    • Then use this information to better highlight your experience and pick which types of companies to apply to.

Conclusion:

While strategy and operations isn’t easy to get into, it can be a rewarding and interesting career for those who are willing to grind through the interview processes.

Have a great day,

Adam
