TODAY’S QUESTION
Today’s Question: “I have applied to over 100 roles and received no interviews yet. I’m coming from a financial services background and looking to transition into Private Equity. How do I improve?”
Recommendation: this feels like two questions. I’ll answer them separately:
First, 100 apps and no interviews. It seems like something you’re doing isn’t working:
Are you applying for roles you’re not a good fit for?
You may be applying for appropriate roles but not showing the relevance on your resume well enough.
Second, transitioning into PE is brutal. I’ve seen a few people do it and here’s what it takes:
If you’re in a ultra-competitive location such as New York or London, you require highly transferrable skills such as M&A or Investment Banking.
Even with this experience, or other Private Equity experience, it’s a challenge.
If you don’t have this background, it’s worth considering a stepping stone between where you are now and then entering your dream field.
Finally, move away from just using the ideas here and find out what the truth is with your background.
Reach out to people who have jobs in the field you want (PE for you) and ask them:
Does your background make sense to get a job?
If not, what would they do if they were you and wanted to move from where you are into that field over the medium term?
Conclusion:
Entering Private Equity is among the most difficult transitions but with the right strategy and a longer timeline, it’s possible.
Have a great day,
Adam
