TODAY’S QUESTION
Today’s Question: “none of my friends or family really get what I’m going through. Is there a place where I can find a community of other job seekers?”
Recommendation: given today’s challenging hiring market, it’s unlikely anyone who isn’t searching will fully “get it”. Here’s what I would do:
First, is it that your family or friends truly don’t get it. Do you give them a chance and let them in.
I’m as guilty as anyone in keeping my anxieties to myself and then blaming those same people for not getting me or the problems. I thought that’s what adults do and am still working on it.
It’s up to you how much you share but it’s a certain type of courage to be willing to share anxieties and weaknesses.
Second, look everywhere online. I’ve had many candidates I work with be fully involved in LinkedIn communities, Reddit sub-reddits, fishbowl, you name it.
Try a bunch of them and see where you find a good fit.
Finally, you don’t absolutely need one single community that fits everything.
You can have a best friend or partner for the worst moments when you need comforting, a bigger group to celebrate the wins, and family to take your mind off things with their own craziness.
Conclusion:
There is no one size fits all for getting a community who understands what you’re going through. No one will fully understand and if you keep an open mind and don’t rush things, you’ll find there are more people willing to help than is obvious at first glance.
Have a great day,
Adam
