TODAY’S QUESTION
Today’s Question: “I am struggling hard to get any interviews, even though I fit 70% of the JD. What can I do to get more interviews?”
Recommendation: in the current job market, this is an ever present reality for most candidates. Here’s what I’d do:
First, help the readers of your resume know that you fit 70% of the JD.
On average, you get 7 seconds and 5 of those seconds are spent looking at location, past companies and job titles. Ensure those are easy to find.
That means you get about 2 seconds on the bullets. They’re likely spent on the first few bullets under your most recent job so get the 70% of your relevant skills in there.
Remove any skill section or summary at the top as they’re often a waste and rarely used to move someone onto the interview stage.
Second, if you feel you’re competing against those with more relevance than 70% or where you’re tied in relevance, they’re picking a candidate who has local experience, find ways to improve your odds.
The most obvious would be through networking. Current employees are often given an incentive to help refer strong candidates so don’t think you’re asking for something and offering nothing in return.
The other way to improve your odds is to write solid cover letters giving more context to your story and why you’d be a great fit. Write these for the jobs where you are a great fit and want to improve your odds. They’re time consuming so don’t waste the time doing them on mid-interest jobs and don’t get AI to write the entire thing.
Finally, if you’re only getting a few interviews here and there, make sure to squeeze every ounce of value from them.
As soon as you get an interview, connect with 10-20 people at the company to learn more about the interview process, company goals, and department expectations.
If possible, go through their sales process as a potential client to understand how they see themselves and ask the sales staff questions about their competitors and how they differentiate themselves. Then use this to answer why you want to work there.
Conclusion:
You’re not alone in getting only a few interviews here and there. Balance the effort towards applications and interview prep to improve your odds of securing a position by asap.
Have a great day,
Adam
