Thursday, February 20 - "Is LinkedIn Useful Anymore?"

Happy Thursday!

Here’s what’s on the job description for today:

  1. New roles from a massive and interesting financial institution.

  2. Today’s Question: “LinkedIn seems to be filled with old jobs with thousands of applicants, fake jobs, and people posting political nonsense. Is it useful anymore?”

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Question: “LinkedIn seems to be filled with old jobs with thousands of applicants, fake jobs, and people posting political nonsense. Is it useful anymore?”

Recommendation: the politics and personal posting does get annoying sometimes. Here’s how it can be best used if your sole focus is getting a job:

  • First, be purposeful with the feed section and take accountability.

    • While some annoying things will come your way regardless of your activity, if you spend time reading through the comments, LinkedIn takes note and send you more like it.

    • The obvious first step for me is to remove connections that annoy you or comment on things you dislike and to follow more people you find useful or interesting.

  • Second, create specific job searches that you can save and come back to.

    • While there are many other job sites, LinkedIn is still the major location for most corporate jobs in big cities.

    • Use the filters and search for jobs that make sense. Then save the web address in a spreadsheet somewhere and go back to it to save time and reduce chances you spend 30 minutes going through the feed.

      • I would focus mostly on the following filters:

        • When the job was posted

        • Industry

        • Seniority

  • Finally, take breaks from it. If you’re on there every day, take a minimum one day off per week so it doesn’t become something that feels so toxic.

Conclusion:

LinkedIn can be a place of agony or value. Set it up so that it works for you and take accountability when you make decisions that have adverse consequences.

Have a great day,

Adam
