Wednesday, March 26 - "What's Up With Remote Roles?"

Happy Wednesday!

Here’s what’s on the job description for today:

  1. New roles from a well-known tech firm with an app many of us have used at one point in our lives.

  2. Today’s Question: “are remote roles still possible and how do I get one?”

TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Question: “are remote roles still possible and how do I get one?”

Recommendation: remote roles still exist but I’ve seen quite a few changes. Here’s how I see the landscape and how I’d land one of these roles:

  • First, the big shift since COVID ended is that there are far fewer totally remote roles, many more hybrid roles, and the definitions of remote have changed.

    • More remote roles now require you to be located in the same country or town but with the ability to come into the office for certain events.

    • Part of this is a a changing culture towards remote work and the other is that tech, where many of these roles existed, has a totally different hiring landscape than it did a few years ago.

  • Second, your best bet is to look for a hybrid role. Most roles I see now are some version of hybrid so it’s much more likely than fully remote.

    • If you want a more remote system, this can be negotiated before you accept the offer or once you begin working. I would offer them the option to pay you more (for the time and cost of going into and home from the office) or to allow you the option of more at-home working days. Either option is good for you.

  • Finally, to land the fully remote roles, you’re going to need to cut through extensive competition.

    • Given fully remote roles are available to way more people than roles where you need to live in a specific city, there are far more applicants.

    • To cut through this competition, focus on roles you’re a 90%+ fit and network. You can often find companies that would be a good fit and offer fully remote roles. You can then network with them before the roles are offered so you’re able to apply right when roles are opened, rather than after they’re posted where you’re fighting time before it closes.

Conclusion:

While hybrid roles are more often available, fully remote roles do exist but you’ll need to find ways to standout from the extensive competition.

Have a great day,

Adam
