TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Question: “I have moved back to India as cost of living is insane. How do I apply from here?”

Recommendation: the costs of living in a big city without a job is wild, especially when the job search itself can take a while.

  • First, consider other options that are available to you. There is value in living in the same time zone and country as those your networking with and jobs you’re applying for. Here are a few other options:

    • Live with friends outside of the city.

    • Live in a smaller town but same country.

    • Long term AirBnB rental where you get a big discount.

  • Second, if you’ve decided to move back to your home country, the largest difference will be that you can’t be involved with in-person interviews or networking.

    • These days, networking is almost entirely done online anyways so who cares.

    • With interviews, it’s more tricky. I’ve seen quite a few companies ask for final rounds to be in-person recently. You can request to schedule it online but it’s not ideal for them or you when competing with those who do go in-person.

  • Finally, what I see most people do in this scenario is a mixture of things.

    • First, they will find a longer term rental with friends or peers. I recommend this website as a place to start.

    • Second, they get a part time job or do freelance work so they can reduce the financial burden. I’ve seen MBA graduates get everything from grocery story jobs to cafe jobs and come out of it with offers.

    • Third, they stay in contact with others who are in their position. Whether you end up moving home or staying in the target location, you want to be surrounded by people also looking for roles. You can find some friends here.

Conclusion:

Whether you move or not is your choice but if you do, focus on keeping a community that will help you.

Have a great day,

Adam
