Today’s Question: “I am applying to an array of roles and am wondering which roles I should apply to if I want to make lots of money. What are your thoughts?”

Recommendation: there are a few industries where you can make a great living. If I were to focus on making as much as possible, here’s how I’d do it:

• First, for most people, corporate services are a great place to make good money. It won’t make you wildly rich, but it’s a high quality of life, prestigious, and you won’t be poor.

• Second, you could join a tech company or scaling company that has a ton of momentum. Work at one of these places for a few years, pile up company stock and hope for an exit in 5 or so years.

  • This is a bit more of a gamble as you don’t know which companies will be the biggest in 5 years but you can make relatively good guesses. I doubt Nvidia will be doing poorly in the years to come but I could be wrong.

• Finally, the easiest way to make great money is through sales.

  • For most people, they can match their industry experience with a sales or business development role and if they are willing to grind and dedicate the same time as a consultant puts in, they can print money.

  • If you end up going for sales, aim for a role where the sales cycle is long (it takes a long time from meeting a client to getting them to buy) and they become long term partners or recurring buyers. These positions tend to have amazing commission structures.

Conclusion:

While money isn’t the key variable for everyone, it’s important for most and it’s good to know your options if you decide to spend a few years building up investments or paying off student loans.
