TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Question: “I have an interview with HR coming up. What questions should I ask them to help me move on?”

Recommendation: you want to find questions that balance moving forward in the interviews and gaining knowledge that will help you. Here’s how I’d do it:

  • First, I like to start with a question that is about the interviewer. This is regardless of the level of interview as it builds rapport.

    • It’s best to have one planned that shows you looked into them and did a bit of research. Something regarding their time at the firm, what keeps them there, or why they chose that company are good starts.

    • If you can, the next level is to create one during the interviews. It’s more difficult but it forces you to listen to what they say rather than always be focused on what you’re going to respond with. You can ask one of the questions they gave you back to them if you found it particularly interesting for example.

  • Second, have a questions that shows you understand the company and want to be part of their vision or what they’re trying to accomplish.

    • An example could be, “I saw in the annual report that the company is moving towards using more AI in their demand prediction. How could the successful candidate be part of those projects that are most critical to the success of this strategy?”

  • Finally, end with a question that will reduce a ton of stress.

    • Ask when you’ll hear back from them regarding next steps. This forces them to give you a defined answer and reduces your anxiety as you wait for an outcome.

Conclusion:

Questions are a critical element to any interview and a good strategy, which thinks about the types of questions you can ask, will set you up best for success.

Have a great day,

Adam
