TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Question: “I have some good experience in strategy and project management and would like to work in consulting. What’s the best way to get more interviews?”

Recommendation: while it depends on the type of consulting your after, here’s how I’d go forward if I was in your shoes:

  • First, there are so many types of consultancies and niches within the industry that it can be a bit overwhelming at first.

    • What I often see is that candidates are applying to everything and spend a lot of their time altering resumes for widely different roles.

    • Instead, I would start by trying to narrow your search down to the types of roles and companies that best fit your experience and interests. This is best done through informational calls with people at 5-10 firms, all of which focus on different things and asking the people you meet who they hire and how you’d fit in their team.

  • Second, once you have a narrowed down list of targets, I would focus next on two things:

    1. Get referrals prepped and ready. By the time a role is open, it’s very tight timing on getting a referral in time before they close the position or stop taking resumes.

    2. Create a saved search on LinkedIn or another platform where you enter the companies and/or other detailed search criteria and then save it so you can refer to it daily without spending the time re-creating it.

  • Finally, you’ll need a strong resume that shows clear relevance. Even though consulting is more open today than it was a year ago, there is still plenty of competition.

    • I would ask the people you meet at each firm if they have advice, even better if they would look at your resume before you apply.

Conclusion:

The goal is to narrow your list down and then create the environment where you have the best chance of receiving an invite. Then you can worry about cases and interview prep :)

Have a great day,

Adam
