“If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. And, if you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Question: “I have been looking for a role for almost a year now. At what point do I say it isn’t working and give up?”

Recommendation: a long job search like that is going to bring with some big ups and downs. Here’s what I’ve seen work for other candidates who are in long job searches:

  • First, I’m a big believer that if nothing changes, nothing changes.

    • If you’re feeling low energy or motivation, make a change to your process in a big way.

    • In my experience, when people partner with me there is an instant injection of energy and excitement that wasn’t there before. This can probably be manufactured in other ways by finding accountability buddies who are in similar positions to you.

  • Second, one of the easiest ways to lose the will to keep going is when a company you were excited about sends you that infamous email, “thanks but go F yourself”.

    • The way to prevent yourself from getting there is to always be filling the top of the funnel.

    • If you are networking, continue to reach out to new people.

    • If you are interviewing, continue to apply to to new jobs.

  • Finally, bad ideas do best when you’re making decisions alone.

    • It doesn’t really matter who it is but keep someone in your corner that you talk to about all the highs and lows.

    • A wise man once said you should surround yourself by people who are excited at your good news and feel bad when you have failures. Find at least one of these people that you can talk to regularly so you’re checking whether your decisions are good ones.

      • Use these people to answer when or if you should give up. That’s an answer I can’t help you with.

Conclusion:

Quitting is a tough one for most people in the job search. A break may make sense but try to build a process that doesn’t require super long breaks.

Have a great day,

Adam
