TODAY’S QUESTION

Today’s Question: “the job search has become my life and I hate it. Is it worth taking a break and if so, how?”

Recommendation: Whether a full-on break is necessary, only you can decide. Here’s what I’ve seen work best:

  • First, think of your search in seasons. Don’t spend every week of your job search doing the same thing.

    • Spend a few weeks learning a relevant hard skill that is in demand.

      • YouTube is now the university of nearly every hard skill and comes at a price point perfect for job seekers.

    • Then switch over to a few weeks where you focus on networking.

    • As you’re in the midst of that season, the focus for the following weeks will come to you.

  • Second, find a great community where you can vent to others who are going through their own version of the grind.

    • If you don’t have nearby friends or family you want or can talk to about this, try something like this to read about others so you don’t feel alone.

  • Finally, spend some time daily or weekly being honest with yourself about where you’re at and what you could be doing to improve things.

    • Here are some questions I might ask:

      • Are you treating yourself worse than you would a friend you cared about?

      • What things would you include in your daily schedule if you were trying to be the healthiest version of yourself?

      • What activities do you think you hate or are bad at but only because you never do them?

Conclusion:

You may need a break and only you can answer for that. If you’re struggling and want to turn it around, try the things above and see how you feel after one week.

Have a great day,

Adam
