TODAY’S QUESTION

Emma asks, “Many of my friends are applying to sustainability or ESG jobs. Should I look at this area?”

Recommendation: Interest in sustainability-based jobs has risen dramatically, alongside titles that include impact. Here are some ideas on this area:

  • While interest has risen dramatically, as candidates try to find roles where they get paid and feel good about the job, the volume of roles has not increased at the same rate. It’s an especially challenging market for anything with the term sustainability or impact at the moment.

  • I always recommend candidates to have a deep think on why they are interested in this type of role. If you truly want to make an impact, you would be better off to find a company in FMCG or manufacturing, where a 1% change in how things are done has a world-wide impact.

  • If after thinking about it, you still are interested in finding a role in impact, you will find out soon that experience in the industry is tough to get. I recommend signing up for a competition, where you can meet industry professionals and prove you can excel in those types of projects.

Conclusion:

I don’t personally recommend it unless you have a deep personal connection. In my experience, there are better ways to make an impact on climate or sustainability but for those that are interested, find a way to get some experience before applying.
