TODAY’S QUESTION

Yorik asks, “No matter what I do, I can’t pass the screening rounds of interviews. What can I do better?”

You’ve got 30 minutes and only a job description. It sounds daunting but there are only a handful of questions you’re likely to be asked.

Recommendation: This is the easiest interview to prepare for. Here’s how to improve your outcomes:

  • Have a logical and personal “why” for this role and company. A good way to check yourself is that if this answer can be used for other companies, it’s probably not quite ready. Try to answer the following:

    • Why is this role a logical next step in your career?

    • How do your personal goals and the goals of the company align?

  • Set reasonable expectations. If the meeting is for under 30 minutes, you’re unlikely to have many questions starting with, “tell me a time you…”. Instead, focus on your introduction, salary expectations, and the point above.

  • Have questions prepared that relate to the interviewer rather than the company or interview process. Everyone asks about the process or company values - don’t be that person. Ask about why they decide to stay working there or why they decided to move from their previous industry or role. Get them talking and then sit back and shut up.

Conclusion:

The screening interview is the easiest interview to prepare for. Use the job description and prepare for the obvious questions to improve your results.
