Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the JD today:

  1. A company blending tech and investing is hiring in Europe, Asia, and North America.

  2. Josh asks, “How important is the brand of the companies on my resume when finding a new role?”

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

TODAY’S QUESTION

Josh asks, “How important is the brand of the companies on my resume when finding a new role?”

Recommendation: Rather than worry about what the name brand of your past employers or future employers, these are the three things I’ve seen make a big impact:

  • The first and most important are hard skills. If you can show you have used the specific tools or skills (CRMs, Excel, coding etc.) in your first few job bullet points, your conversion rate will sky rocket.

  • The second is local experience. If you are about to start a new degree, mid-way through, or recently graduated, try to find local commercial experience somehow. The most common ways are volunteer, internship, or starting your own venture. All are good ways to ensure they see you have local experience.

  • Finally, and often most useful, is deep industry experience. This is what makes transitioning industries so difficult. Try to look at roles that are seeking your industry experience - examples include transitioning to a different sector but within the same industry value chain (example: supplier to client).

Conclusion:

Don’t worry about big brand names like Google or McKinsey - focus on the skills you want to develop and find roles that will nurture that focus.
