Monday, June 3 - "Is Consulting Dead?"

Why did the consultant bring a ladder to the client’s office?

Because he heard they were looking for high-level solutions.

IN HIRING

Accenture

  • The firm with more employees than a small country, Accenture is a great place to use or build expertise in technology.

  • Currently, there are over 100 jobs open from all over world including those in consulting, product, and strategy.

  • With so many employees, you’re likely to have someone from your network currently employed there. It should be an easier firm to get a referral than most.

TODAY’S QUESTION

Manisha asks, “None of the consulting firms are hiring. Is it even worth looking at consulting jobs right now?”

We just passed what would usually be one of the largest hiring seasons for consulting, and yet I saw little to nothing in terms of roles. Yet, I still get daily questions from candidates who want to work in strategy consulting 🤔🤔.

Recommendation: For the time being, most of the consulting firms are not hiring but there are opportunities if you know where to look.

  • MBB did some interviews (did they hire anyone?) earlier this year but most of the hiring occurs at the tier 2 level (Big 4, LEK, Roland Berger, Alix Partners etc.). Those companies are almost nearly all on hiring freezes except for very specific teams.

  • Instead, the positions that are open are either internal consulting roles or at firms that are hiring for small but growing teams or replacing those that have left. To be a good fit, consider the industry you have experience in and find teams that are hiring for those teams.

  • For those that are interested, here are a few examples of teams that are hiring still:

    • Baringa Partners’ energy practice: Click Here

    • Alvarez & Marsal’s financial services practices: Click Here

    • Efficio for procurement specialists: Click Here

Conclusion:

Strategy consulting is in a bad spot. If you still dream of one day joining the 4-days at clients site and solving the complex problems of the largest companies in the world, I would look for strategy roles internally and build the skills while consulting companies get through the current economic turmoil.
