Monday, May 20 - I Need Sponsorship!

Let’s get you working like a dog

Good morning!

Today marks the very first newsletter for those that are #OpenToWork!

The topics for today are:

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

IN HIRING

  • The company works in advertising, serving a wide range of clients including Coca Cola, Lloyds Banking Group, and Samsung.

  • Roles available include sales, HR, strategy and a very interesting Senior Consultant role. Bonus that the working hours are only 10 - 4!

  • One of the benefits is the truly diverse nature of the company with a female CEO and groups they call employee networks (hopefully more fun than they sound) for parents, DEI, and LGBTQ.

TODAY’S QUESTION

Muhammad asks, “Adam, I need sponsorship! How do I get a job that comes with one?”

First of all, I appreciate the exclamation point - it got my attention!

I recommend being upfront, direct, and confident in communicating your need for sponsorship.

  • Every conversation with an employer or potential referral needs to include you asking if they sponsor. No need to stress the entire process - just get it out of the way early.

  • A good indicator of a company open to sponsorship is past sponsorship. Network with employees who aren’t from the UK and ask them over LinkedIn or a phone call what they’ve seen or experienced.

  • As well, it helps to be applying to companies that are known to sponsor. There are many free lists on the internet of such companies including this one. It’s free so expect some errors here and there.

Conclusion:

You’d be surprised how many companies are open to sponsorship if you bring it up. Search for companies that have sponsored before and be confident in bringing it up early in the process.
