TODAY’S QUESTION

Rohit asks, “I’m exhausted and haven’t had a single interview in over 2 months. What am I doing wrong?”

Recommendation: Hey Rohit, I’ve been getting a lot of messages similar to this recently so don’t feel like you’re alone. Here’s what I’d do in that situation:

  • First, make sure you’ve got the absolute basics covered in your life. Many candidates are so stressed about their day-to-day lives that the applications they do send are terrible.

    • Get four walls around you - they don’t need to be in a city center; price over premium location.

    • Figure out your finances - do you need a part time job? Cafes, restaurants, grocery stores, whatever.

    • Have a few friends - you need people in your life or you’ll spiral downhill. Aim to talk to a minimum of one to two people per day.

  • Second, I would meditate on what’s happening for a bit. Sit somewhere quiet and ask yourself what the real problem is. It’s likely that you know more than you think but are unwilling to face the reality that you’re not putting in the effort or you’re aiming at something that doesn’t make sense or whatever the problem may be.

    • Along these same lines, what did work? You mention it’s been a few months but that infers there was some success somewhere. What was working - do more of that.

  • Finally, put it all together with mini-sprints. This works for anyone but definitely if you’re struggling.

    • Set a two week strategy that you feel would work and you actually would do. Then just aim to complete everything on that list every day for two weeks. Afterwards, have a short strategy session and look at what was helping and alter appropriately.

    • If you can’t process two weeks, set a one week strategy or even a few days. Be humble enough to set the time line realistically short enough that you’ll truly accomplish it.

Conclusion:

No matter where you’re at, if you’re struggling to see the light at the end of this journey, set a shorter timeline and build a strategy that truly works.

Best of luck!
