TODAY’S QUESTION
Rohit asks, “one of my classmates who is way less qualified than I am got a job. What am I doing wrong?”
I think even people without MBAs wonder if there are too many sometimes…
Recommendation: Here are my thoughts in terms of the job market:
First, the MBA still provides much of what it is marketed as:
Changing location
Changing industries
Changing functions or roles
Second, unfortunately all of those have become increasingly difficult. Even on location, governments are becoming less and less friendly to the global movement of talent as Visas increase in price or become more challenging to get.
Finally, While there are a lot of MBA students graduating or the holders of those degrees looking for work, many of them present a very similar profile of good companies, solid school, and some volunteer.
If everyone is going one way, it provides the opportunity to stand out by doing something different:
Launch a company during the degree
Do consulting work for small businesses
Learn a language that would make you more marketable
Solve a problem in your life by coding your own product
Conclusion:
There are a lot of candidates in the market with similar degrees and stories. If you’re able to put aside some time consistently, you can do things that will help you stand out.
