TODAY’S QUESTION

Alice asks, “I’m so beat up from the hiring process that my personal relationships are struggling. Do you have any advice?”

Recommendation: For those taking part in a longer job search, this is a common side effect of being part of the crappy, every-day job search:

  • First, a critical part of the job search is having something to reward yourself when you achieve something. An example is that every time you interview, you do something you enjoy. If not, then the whole process is just bad compounded on terrible.

  • Second, Try to include people you care about in that reward. Every two or three interviews, make a small lunch and go for a picnic. It costs nothing and gets you out of the house and talking with someone who isn’t a potential referral.

  • Finally, have a deep think about your process. What activities do you perform that produce the best outcomes. Keep those and consider among the other things you do what can be dropped or reduced.

    • It’s critical that you have a process which is sustainable.

Conclusion:

Taking care of your emotional health is the best way to improve the relationships you have with those around you. Focus on a sustainable process and enjoying parts of the job search for best outcomes.
