TODAY’S QUESTION

Jennifer asks, “I am open to different geographies. How difficult is it to find a job in the US?”

Recommendation: The USA is nearly impossible to get into. Here are your ways in, as per my experience and understanding:

  • First, the way in is through school, basically. If you get a job that is somehow willing to sponsor you, it’s still a lottery system. Given the difficulty MBA students from top schools in the USA are having, I wouldn’t count on it as an easy next step for you.

  • Second, if you do have a work visa, I’ve found second and third tier cities like Atlanta or Portland to be the best in finding roles right now. The USA has big companies with offices in more cities than most other regions of the world and these provide a great standard of living without as much competition.

  • Finally, understand why you are choosing the USA? Is it because of income, freedom, large brands, or something else?

    • Based on your response to the last bullet, here are some places I’d go depending on what is most important to you along with job boards for those places:

Conclusion:

The USA is a popular destination for many job candidates but it’s difficult. Be open to a wide range of geographies for best outcomes.
