TODAY’S QUESTION

Cherry asks, “It’s been a while since my last interview and I haven’t heard back. Do I follow up or leave it?

We’ve all been there… The conversation went well and you feel like a good fit. They said they’d be in touch but now you’re questioning your entire existence.

Recommendation: If it’s been over a week, it’s time to reach out. Depending on the country, use language that fits the culture.

  • The first thing to do is to relax a bit. One thing that unites the person who gets the offer and those that don’t is that they’re all anxious about hearing back after the interview. If it hasn’t been at least a week since you last spoke with them, just leave it.

  • If it’s been a week, then you’re well within your right to follow up. Now it becomes a question of how. I recommend following some local culture rules here. If you’re in a country that doesn’t appreciate direct conversation (think UK, Canada, USA etc.), then don’t ask what the outcome was - instead ask “do you know when you’ll have a final decision”. It has the same outcome but a more gentle touch.

  • If you’re not from the country you’re job searching in, click here for a better understanding of whether you should use a more or less direct approach.

Conclusion:

Don’t despair - HR teams are globally known for poor communication. If it’s been a week, follow up but try to do it in a way that will be culturally acceptable to the reader.
