TODAY’S QUESTION

Robyn asks, “I feel like networking should be more personal than just asking questions about the company or talking about my achievements. How do I know the right balance?”

I agree Robyn! For every 1 person who asks me questions in an intro chat, there are 10 who just talk about themselves the whole time.

Recommendation: Networking is the difference maker for many in the interview process. Here’s how to improve in it and where it can be most useful:

  • First, understand that no random person cares about you. Instead, ask them to introduce themself and ask about the portion of their background that you actually find interesting. That’s 90% of the battle.

  • Second, get into the habit of networking without as much expectation. Chat with people who’s company isn’t hiring but you may want a referral in the future.

    • One of the best ways I’ve seen networking help is for those who have an interview and network with current employees to better understand the trends, challenges and goals of the department or firm, rather than needing a referral. That makes a massive difference in interview outcomes.

  • Finally, practice setting up a schedule of follow ups. The best practice is following up in 24 hours after the first call, again a month after that, and then quarterly. Try to move off of LinkedIn and onto email or WhatsApp so you can move past the initial weak relationship status and closer to “buddy” or “friend”.

Conclusion:

Networking can be pretty brutal. Make it better by imagining yourself as the interviewer on a talk show that you want to be interesting and ask lots of questions.
