TODAY’S QUESTION

Garret asks, “I’ve got banking experience but hate the culture. Does it make sense to change to fintech?”

Recommendation: it sounds easier than it is. Here’s how I’d make the transition:

  • First, reach out to 20-50 people who have roles in that industry that you would want. It doesn’t matter if the company is hiring at this stage.

    • The purpose is to better understand the industry, some trends, and goals of the companies where the people you’re speaking to work.

    • End each conversation by asking how they would get a similar job if they had your experience. This will help guide your search.

  • Second, narrow down your search. Fintech is a big space and spans everything from payments to loans.

    • I find that fintechs tend to specialize in something that banks would consider a department. Use your past experience to make things easier on yourself.

  • Finally, set yourself some goals for the next month. I recommend starting with a number of conversations you’re aiming to have each week along with the number of jobs you absolutely love that you apply to. Aim for around 1 conversation and 5 applications to get started.

Conclusion:

Moving to fintech is a solid play. If you’re really stuck, there’s always the startups that are desperate for anyone with financial services experience!
