TODAY’S QUESTION

Jeff asks, “I hear ChatGPT and other LLMs provide poor quality applications. I’ve been using it a bit here and there - what’s your take on using it in job apps?”

Recommendation: reasonable question, Jeff. I could talk about this for hours but here’s how I’d think about it as a candidate.

  • First, from my understanding and experience, the quality of output from these language models depends a lot on our ability to provide specific and high quality inputs. As they say, crap in, crap out.

    • I do believe that with strong prompts, higher quality applications are possible and I’ve seen first hand many candidates get interviews from applications made with ChatGPT.

  • Second, don’t rely on any technology fully for your job search. Instead, build it into a process that isn’t difficult to use but achieves great outcomes.

    • As the outcomes are played out, tinker with the process to test what works best.

  • Finally, find what has been working for your peers.

    • Most of the candidates I speak to have a big community of others who are looking for roles. They’re all talented and hardworking but with the job market the way it currently is, that isn’t enough anymore.

    • Use this group to find out what prompts they’re using to get interviews. If they’re not getting great results, keep looking :)

Conclusion:

Make LLMs a part of your overall application process and focus your efforts on making that a process that an idiot could follow and still get interviews.

Have a great day,

Adam
