TODAY’S QUESTION
Today’s Question: “I want to work in one of the industries that will boom in the next 5-10 years and ride that wave. Any tips on choosing an industry?”
Recommendation: an interesting question to reflect on - this is how I’d think about it:
First, while nothing is impossible, the reality in today’s job market is that changing industries is very difficult.
This can be done if you have specific experience that is transferrable, especially hard skills in data analytics or product development.
As well, if you’re coming from a consulting background, there are plenty of opportunities available to you.
Second, rather than focusing on a specific industry, take a look at emerging technologies where you can get hands on experience.
By focusing on technologies, you can still keep your options open if an industry that is hot and trendy doesn’t play out the way you think it does.
Finally, look for the blend of emerging technology and your personal interest. Emerging technologies that have grown significantly in the past go through long periods of contraction or instability so personal interest will keep you going through those difficult times.
A great place to start is Crunchbase (link here). They provide a week free trial which is plenty of time to look through recently funded companies to understand the current trends from an investment perspective.
Conclusion:
I always like blue sky thinking and this is a fun one. Spending some time researching what is emerging at the moment can give you a great starting point.
Have a great day,
Adam
