TODAY’S QUESTION
Yoko asks, “I have been invited to a case study interview where they give me some data and documents and then I present in an hour. How do I prepare for this?”
Recommendation: this is relatively common type of interview but trips up a ton of candidates. Here’s how I’d prepare:
First, learn absolutely everything you can about the interview.
Often, the company will send a package in an email explaining the details
Look up the interviewer and know their specialty and background
See if you can find out how long you’ll have to present and whether questions will be asked during or at the end
Second, put together a cheat sheet for yourself. Put down the most likely industries or topics relevant to the case. Write down key trends and critical things to know about each of the industries you write down so you have something to refer to when building the presentation.
Check the industries the company works in as that’s usually a big give away.
As well, if the interviewer has a specific industry they work in, that can help.
Finally, create a process that you will follow during the interview. Include such things as:
How will you read the case? Will you focus on specific things first?
Where will you write down or how will you remember key information from the case?
Build a skeleton deck in advance so you don’t have to during the case.
Conclusion:
There are a few specific to prepare for but basically do everything you can before the case is given to you so you can focus that time on reading and building a presentation.
Have a great day,
Adam
