TODAY’S QUESTION

Tiffany asks, “I am so tired of rejection. How do I know when to give up?”

Recommendation: The outcome of many job searches is the result of what candidates do right after this inevitable feeling. Here’s how to move forward:

  • First, know that this is how everyone feels at some point. That does not change things but know you are not alone.

  • Second, take a mental health day (or two). Treat yourself like you are sick - YouTube, lots of liquids, sweatpants, Netflix, and whatever else you love. Try to stay off all social media and block LinkedIn from your life.

    • Use this to block all social media for a period

  • Finally, after your day or two off, know that giving up is rarely an option. Sometimes you have a job (you hated) to go back to or a parent who can help, but you are where you are because at some point in your past you pushed forward when you felt like you were failing.

    • For the next few weeks, change strategies. If you were networking a lot, lean into easy apply and send 5x the number of applications with no adaptations. If you have been doing that, focus on networking. Just change something to keep the job search dynamic and interesting enough to do it for one more day.

Conclusion:

You are not alone. Take some time to relax and recharge and then change up your strategy and focus on keeping it interesting enough that you don’t hate it.
