TODAY’S QUESTION

Karl asks, “I see a lot of roles posted by Amazon. I know they pay well and was wondering how to get in.”

Recommendation: Amazon is a huge company with a well-known brand. It’s not uncommon to see someone on LinkedIn with “ex-Amazon” in their title. They do pay above market rates, and here’s how I have seen others get roles there:

  • The easiest way I’ve seen people get interviews at Amazon is through referrals. The company loves them and since they hire so many masters students, it’s likely you have alumni there you can call on.

    • If you don’t have a referral, you’ll need to show you have nearly the exact skills they’re looking for in the job description. They post quite a few roles so find ones where your past domain expertise would make you a clear fit.

  • Once you get past the resume screening, you will be invited to a 15-minute chat with the recruiter. This is where they see if you actually have any relevant skills and if you’re a fit. Know that the leadership principles on their website are crucial to the process and have one that stands out to you. Make this your answer on “why Amazon”.

  • Finally, if you pass that, you’ll be given ~5 interviews over one or two days. They will each ask you two situational (STAR) questions based on their leadership principles and one of those interviewers will be what is called a “bar-raiser” who is meant to act as an unbiased judge of you.

    • These are quite intense so block the days off and prepare for each leadership principle, except frugality as they don’t use that one anymore.

Conclusion:

Amazon is an amazing way to boost your resume and career but they have a very challenging interview process. Knowing what’s coming will help a lot in preparing to the proper degree.
