Thursday, July 25 - "How Are Others Getting Jobs?"

Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the JD today:

  1. One of the world’s most famous technology companies is hiring.

  2. Anna asks, “I still see people on LinkedIn getting new roles but while everyone is talking about how this market is brutal. How are others getting jobs?”

“Technology made large populations possible; large populations now make technology indispensable.”

- Joseph Krutch

  • With many project, product, finance, and marketing roles available, they’re one company everyone should keep on the list of favourites.

TODAY’S QUESTION

Anna asks, “I still see people on LinkedIn getting new roles but while everyone is talking about how this market is brutal. How are others getting jobs?”

Even though the candidates I’m working with are having a harder time than those of similar qualifications were a year ago, it can be surprising to see how many people are posting new roles. Part of that is the number of students who recently graduated now posting their full-time role, even though they may have signed an offer some time in the past few months.

Recommendation: Here is what I’m seeing work for those that are finding roles:

  • I have seen a big boost for those that post online and their ability to make connections, which lead to more interview opportunities. The posts range from asking for help to explaining a recent project they worked on to commenting on other’s posts. The learning has been that if you post at least once a week for a month or so, it seems to provide a few more opportunities than if not.

  • The most obvious thing that is working is applying to roles that you’re a really good fit for when it comes to hard skills. If they ask for the ability to create dashboards and manipulate large sets of data, it’s rarely a person without lots of experience in those areas that gets the job. Companies are not taking chances on “good culture fits” unless they’re also great fits for the job description.

  • Finally, I’ve seen a pop in the number of candidates finding jobs in countries they didn’t attend school in. Most often, students choose a school that is in a country in which they want to stay but I’ve seen more candidates moving for roles recently.

Conclusion:

The recent boost in those finding roles may not be because they landed the jobs in the past few weeks. Knowing that, networking and being open to different regions seems to work well in finding a role recently.
