TODAY’S QUESTION

Danielle asks, “Adam, I’ve tried everything and I’m exhausted. Why isn’t it working and how do I keep going?”

I get this question daily. With the layoffs in tech, graduates from previous years who were under-employed, and recent graduates entering the market, there’s an oversaturation.

Recommendation: Start as early as possible and aim for momentum in action, rather than focusing on output. Here’s what I mean:

  • The first thing is to start as early as possible - a minimum of 3 months before graduation if possible. If you’re already graduated, move to the next point. If not, begin networking and applying early - it will give a good sense of how challenging or easy it will be for a person with your experience to get interviews in your chosen field.

  • Next, set yourself up for action and momentum rather than outcomes. To do this, create an email folder with a rule that catches every email with the words “unfortunately” or “another candidate” so that you don’t see rejections every day and can focus on moving forward - instead check that folder once a week. Also, try to change things up every few weeks (one page resume to two, include a summary at the beginning and then remove it) to keep yourself moving.

  • The final thing I’d recommend is to find a way to get some income once you graduate. The desperation that comes along with the financial burden of not having a job makes you worse at interviewing - I guarantee it. There are many freelance or part time roles available - click here for a job board that features these in London or Google it for your specific city.

Conclusion:

Set yourself up for success by starting early, focusing on action, and reducing the financial burden so you can withstand what is often a longer process than we wish it was.
